SERVICES: Bovine: Surgery

Bovine surgery is performed routinely at Leduc Farm Animal Hospital. The more common surgeries include stomach displacements in dairy cows, c-sections in beef cattle and calf hernia repair.

Less common surgeries include eye removal, cosmetic dehorning and wound repair to name a few.

Our intensive calf surgeries, such as hernia repair or abdominal explanatory surgeries are often done under general anesthesia. This is considered the gold standard because the animal feels no pain, is supplied with a constant supply of oxygen and there is no patient movement during the procedure.

Adult surgeries, such as the LDA shown, are done standing in the head gate. We clip and scrub the surgical field with very wide margins and use a local anesthetic.
